The dentist who placed or monitors the restoration should give the most relevant instructions. Materials, bridge design, implant involvement and gum condition can all change the technique. Still, understanding the basic geometry makes those instructions easier to follow.
Find the margins
The crown margin is the boundary where the restoration meets the natural tooth. Plaque can collect near that edge, particularly if the area is crowded or the gumline is difficult to see. Brush with a soft-bristled brush and controlled movements rather than assuming the crown needs heavier pressure. Clean the inner and outer surfaces as carefully as the visible front.
Floss can usually pass between a single crown and the neighboring tooth, unless a dentist has advised otherwise. Guide it through the contact, curve it against one side and move it gently up and down. Pulling straight up with force can be uncomfortable and may catch at an irregular edge. If floss repeatedly shreds or sticks in one location, arrange a dental check instead of sawing through the area.
Go underneath a fixed bridge
The false tooth in a traditional fixed bridge is called a pontic. Because it is connected to the supporting crowns, standard floss cannot drop between those joined units from above. The underside and the gum-facing edges still need cleaning.
A floss threader can carry floss beneath the bridge. Stiff-ended floss combines a firmer threading section with a thicker cleaning section. Once the material is under the pontic, move it along the underside and against the supporting teeth without snapping it into the tissue. The exact motion depends on the space and design, so a demonstration from a hygienist is worth requesting.

Choose tools by access rather than popularity
No single tool reaches every surface around every restoration. A person might use ordinary floss beside one crown, threaded floss under a bridge and a small brush in an open space elsewhere. That is not an unnecessarily complicated routine. It is a response to different shapes.
Water flossers can flush along margins and beneath some bridgework, and their handles may be easier for people who struggle with threaders. Make the routine easy to inspect
Clean in the same order each day. For example, brush all tooth surfaces, floss ordinary contacts, thread beneath the bridge, then use any additional device that has been recommended. A consistent sequence makes it easier to notice when a space suddenly feels different.
Good lighting and a mirror help, but the absence of visible food does not guarantee a clean margin. Plaque is not always obvious. If access is awkward, ask the hygienist to watch the technique and correct the angle. A two-minute demonstration can prevent months of cleaning the wrong surface.
Care for the tools as well. Rinse reusable handles and interdental brushes according to their instructions, allow them to dry, and replace them when worn. Empty and clean a water-flosser reservoir as directed by the manufacturer. Do not share tips or reuse single-use floss.
Protect the routine during meals and travel
Food that packs beneath a bridge can make the area uncomfortable, but repeatedly poking it with a fingernail or sharp object risks injuring the gum. A small case containing threaded floss or the correct interdental brush is easier to carry than improvising with whatever is available.
Crowns and bridges also deserve sensible treatment during chewing. Avoid using restored teeth to crack ice, open packaging or bite objects that are not food. If a particular food repeatedly becomes trapped or the bite suddenly feels high, mention it to the dentist. A cleaning problem may sometimes reflect a fit or contact issue that needs professional adjustment rather than a more forceful home technique.
Recognize changes that need a dentist
Contact a dentist if a crown or bridge feels loose, the bite changes, floss begins to catch or shred, or there is persistent pain, swelling, bleeding, bad taste or odor around the restoration. Sensitivity that is new or worsening also deserves review. These signs have several possible causes and cannot be diagnosed from appearance alone.
A chipped surface or loose unit should not be repaired with household glue. Keep the area clean, avoid chewing hard foods on that side and seek professional advice. Urgent care may be needed for facial swelling, fever, trauma, uncontrolled bleeding or difficulty swallowing.
Crowns and bridges alter access, not the basic goal. Plaque still needs to be removed from the tooth-restoration margins, the neighboring contacts and the underside of bridgework. Once each surface has a specific tool and place in the routine, maintenance becomes far less mysterious.
